CORAL CHALLENGE CUP 2ND ROUND
SATURDY 10TH FEBRUARY 2019
THORNHILL TROJANS 20 ROCHDALE MAYFIELD 30
AT OVERTHORPE PARK
Thornhill Trojans were dealt a harsh lesson about what life in the National Conference Premier Division is going to be like with this disappointing showing against Rochdale Mayfield. The Trojans came into this game on a high after their victory at Hunslet Parkside. However, fellow Premier Division Rochdale Mayfield showed the Trojans they should take nothing for granted and if you don’t perform to your best, then games will be lost.
Thornhill never really got going in this game, and despite a rally in the second half their poor discipline cost them dearly as they ended the game with 11 men due to 2 red cards. Both teams scored 4 tries each, the difference was that the visitors used the penalties which the Trojans gifted them to kick goals and pull clear to victory.
Man of the match for the Trojans was second row Jake Wilson. Wilson ran tirelessly for the Trojans in what at times seemed a lost cause. There was also a good showing from George Stott as he registered a brace of tries. Zach Johnson also looked impressive until he was sent off late in the game.
Thornhill made a terrible start to this game as Rochdale put them under early pressure. A strong run from prop Sean Hurley proved to be too much for the Thornhill defence to contend with as he forced his way over the line for a try. Zak Hartley converted.
This score was swiftly followed by a penalty goal from Zak Hartley as the visitors continued to torment Thornhill in the early stages of this game.
A high tackle then caused tempers to boil over as players rushed in to settle their differences. Eventually order was restored and Rochdale’s Mark Biggins was shown a yellow card for his part in the dispute. The referee then reached into his pocket and showed Thornhill’s Jack Gledhill a red card.
Another penalty goal from Rochdale’s Zak Hartley increased their lead to 10-0 before Thornhill finally showed some spirit right on the half hour mark with a try from George Stott. Swift handling from Thornhill saw the ball travel at speed along the attacking line. An overlap was created and George Stott went over for an unconverted try near to the corner.
This score was soon cancelled out with a try from Rochdale. From a scrum down, Rochdale took play blind and space was created for winger Munya Samanyanga to score a try in the corner. Zak Hartley converted.
Another penalty goal from Zak Hartley made the half time score 4-18 to the visitors.
Harsh words were exchanged by the Thornhill players during the half time interval as the Trojans looked to dig themselves out of this hole.
The half time exchange of views seemed to give Thornhill a bit more direction as the second half got underway. The Trojans pressed for the Rochdale line and Matthew Tebb twisted his way over for a try from close range. George Woodcock converted.
But 2 quick fire tries from the visitors left Thornhill with too much to do and victory was virtually secured.
First Lewis Sheridan broke clear from just inside Thornhill’s half of the field. Sheridan showed superb speed as he raced away to score a long range try much to the delight of the travelling Rochdale supporters. The goal was missed.
The game restarted and a missed tackle left the Thornhill try line exposed. John Foy took advantage of the opening to cross for a try which Zak Hartley converted.
With Rochdale now leading by 20 points there didn’t look to be enough time left on the clock for Thornhill to salvage anything from this game. The Trojans did however produce a late flurry.
A run around from Thornhill close to the try line ended with Zach Johnson forcing his way over for a try. George Woodcock converted.
George Stott then burst through the Rochdale defence to reach out and plant the ball down over the try line to score and unconverted try.
But this proved to be too little too late and Thornhill’s afternoon was summed up when Zach Johnson was held up over the try line. Tempers boiled over and the referee showed Zach Johnson red card.
The Trojans must now regroup and prepare for the visit of West Hull to start their Premier Division campaign.
